Selamat Hari Natal 2014

Tuhan Yesus memberkati kita semua. Amin.

Beban Terberat

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi a Hungarian psychology professor mengatakan :

Terus berkarya !

From JOB SECURITY to CAREER SECURITY

“Berapa harga semangkanya ?”

Return on Invested Capital ( ROIC ) Overview

#Investopedia

Return on invested capital, or ROIC, is arguably one of the most reliable performance metrics for spotting quality investments. But in spite of its importance, the metric doesn't get the same level of interest and exposure as indicators like the P/E or ROE ratios. Admittedly, investors can't just pull ROIC straight off a financial document like they can with better known performance ratios; calculating ROIC requires a bit more work. But for those eager to learn just how much profit and, hence, true value a company is producing, calculating the ROIC is well worth the effort.

Important mainly for assessing companies in industries that invest a large amount of capital - such as oil and gas players, semiconductor chip companies and even food giants - ROIC is a telling gauge for comparing the relative profitability levels of companies. For many industrial sectors, ROIC is the preferred benchmark for comparing performance. In fact, if investors were forced to rely on a sole ratio (which we do not recommend), they would be best off choosing ROIC. (There are many indicators for ranking a corporation's success.

The Calculations
Defined as the cash rate of return on capital that a company has invested, ROIC shows how much cash is going out of a business in relation to how much is coming in. In an nutshell, ROIC is the measure of cash-on-cash yield and the effectiveness of the company's employment of capital. The formula looks like this:

ROIC = Net Operating Profits After Tax (NOPAT) / Invested Capital
At first glance, the formula looks simple. But in the complex financial statements published by companies, generating an accurate number from the formula can be trickier than it appears. To keep things simple, start with invested capital, the formula's denominator. Representing all the cash that investors have put into the company, invested capital is derived from the assets and liabilities portions of the balance sheet as follows:

Invested Capital = Total Assets less Cash - Short-Term Investments - Long-Term Investments - Non-Interest Bearing Current Liabilities

Now, investors turn to the income statement to determine the numerator, which is after-tax operating profits, or NOPAT. Sometimes NOPAT is the same as net income. For many companies, especially bigger ones, some net income comes from outside investments, in which case net income does not reflect the profitability of operating activities. Reported net income needs to be adjusted to represent operations more accurately. At the same time, the published net income figure also may include non-cash items that need to be added and subtracted from NOPAT to reflect true cash yield. For the purpose of showing all of a company's cash profits from the capital it invests, NOPAT is calculated as the following:

NOPAT = Reported Net Income - Investment and Interest Income - Tax Shield from Interest Expenses (effective tax rate x interest expense) + Goodwill Amortization + Non-Recurring Costs plus Interest Expenses + Tax Paid on Investments and Interest Income (effective tax rate x investment income)

Interpreting ROIC
If the final ROIC figure, which is expressed as a percentage, is greater than the company's working asset cost of capital, or WACC, the company is creating value for investors. The WACC represents the minimum rate of return (risk adjusted) at which a company produces value for its investors. Let's say a company produces a ROIC of 20% and has a cost of capital of 11%. That means the company has created nine cents of value for every dollar that it invests in capital. By contrast, if ROIC is less than WACC, the company is eroding value, and investors should be putting their money elsewhere. (To fully utilize any stock metric, you must know how to read an income statement.

The extent to which ROIC exceeds WACC provides an extremely powerful tool for choosing investments. The P/E ratio, on the other hand, does not tell investors whether the company is producing value or how much capital the company consumes to produce its earnings. ROIC, by contrast, provides all this valuable information and more.

Moreover, ROIC helps explain why companies trade at different P/E ratios. The market demonstrates this well. From 1999 to 2003, the S&P 500 average P/E ratio fell roughly from 25 to 15, so the S&P 500 was trading at a discount to its historical multiple - does that mean the S&P 500 was oversold? Some market watchers thought so, but ROIC-based analysis suggested otherwise. Although the P/E ratio diminished, there was also a proportional reduction in the market's ROIC. This makes a lot of sense: since 1999 companies had had a much harder time allocating capital to worthwhile projects.

Investors should look not only at the level of ROIC but also the trend. A falling ROIC can provide an early warning sign of a company's difficulty in choosing investment opportunities or coping with competitors. ROIC that is going up, meanwhile, strongly indicates that a company is pulling ahead of competitors or that its managers are more effectively allocating capital investments.

The Bottom Line
ROIC is a highly reliable instrument for measuring investment quality. It takes a bit of work, but, once investors start figuring out ROIC, they can begin to track company results annually and be better armed to spot quality companies before everyone else does.

#WikiInvest

Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) is used to judge how well companies generate earnings from capital invested in their business. It is essentially the return a company earns on each dollar invests in itself. ROIC is defined as Net Operating Profits Less Adjusted Taxes (NOPLAT) divided by the sum of Working Capital and fixed assets. Return on capital invested is a key driver of a business value (the higher it is, the higher the value) as it represents the return a company earns on its projects relative to its cost of capital.

When a company's return on invested capital is greater than their cost of capital (commonly measured as the weighted average cost of capital, or WACC) they are creating value by investing in their projects. When this is not the case and company's WACC is greater than their ROIC they are said to be destroying value by investing capital in their business.

...

#Wikipedia

Return on invested capital (ROIC) is a financial measure that quantifies how well a company generates cash flow relative to the capital it has invested in its business. It is defined as net operating profit less adjusted taxes divided by invested capital and is usually expressed as a percentage. In this calculation, capital invested includes all monetary capital invested: long-term debt, common and preferred shares.

When the return on capital is greater than the cost of capital (usually measured as the weighted average cost of capital), the company is creating value; when it is less than the cost of capital, value is destroyed.

Note that the numerator in the ROIC fraction does not subtract interest expense, because the return is calculated for total capital, and not only equity capital.

Weighted Average Cost Of Capital ( WACC ) Overview

#Investopedia

Weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is a calculation of a firm's cost of capital in which each category of capital is proportionately weighted. All capital sources - common stock, preferred stock, bonds and any other long-term debt - are included in a WACC calculation. All else equal, the WACC of a firm increases as the beta and rate of return on equity increases, as an increase in WACC notes a decrease in valuation and a higher risk.

The WACC equation is the cost of each capital component multiplied by its proportional weight and then summed:

Broadly speaking, a company's assets are financed by either debt or equity. WACC is the average of the costs of these sources of financing, each of which is weighted by its respective use in the given situation. By taking a weighted average, we can see how much interest the company has to pay for every dollar it finances.

A firm's WACC is the overall required return on the firm as a whole and, as such, it is often used internally by company directors to determine the economic feasibility of expansionary opportunities and mergers. It is the appropriate discount rate to use for cash flows with risk that is similar to that of the overall firm.

Further Understanding WACC
The capital funding of a company is made up of two components: debt and equity. Lenders and equity holders each expect a certain return on the funds or capital they have provided. The cost of capital is the expected return to equity owners (or shareholders) and to debtholders, so WACC tells us the return that both stakeholders - equity owners and lenders - can expect. WACC, in other words, represents the investor's opportunity cost of taking on the risk of putting money into a company.

To understand WACC, think of a company as a bag of money. The money in the bag comes from two sources: debt and equity. Money from business operations is not a third source because, after paying for debt, any cash left over that is not returned to shareholders in the form of dividends is kept in the bag on behalf of shareholders. If debt holders require a 10% return on their investment and shareholders require a 20% return, then, on average, projects funded by the bag of money will have to return 15% to satisfy debt and equity holders. The 15% is the WACC.

If the only money the bag held was $50 from debtholders and $50 from shareholders, and the company invested $100 in a project, to meet expectations the project would have to return $5 a year to debtholders and $10 a year to shareholders. This would require a total return of $15 a year, or a 15% WACC.

WACC: An Investment Tool
Securities analysts employ WACC all the time when valuing and selecting investments. In discounted cash flow analysis, for instance, WACC is used as the discount rate applied to future cash flows for deriving a business's net present value. WACC can be used as a hurdle rate against which to assess ROIC performance. It also plays a key role in economic value added (EVA) calculations.

Investors use WACC as a tool to decide whether to invest. The WACC represents the minimum rate of return at which a company produces value for its investors. Let's say a company produces a return of 20% and has a WACC of 11%. That means that for every dollar the company invests into capital, the company is creating nine cents of value. By contrast, if the company's return is less than WACC, the company is shedding value, which indicates that investors should put their money elsewhere.

WACC serves as a useful reality check for investors. To be blunt, the average investor probably wouldn't go to the trouble of calculating WACC because it is a complicated measure that requires a lot of detailed company information. Nonetheless, it helps investors to know the meaning of WACC when they see it in brokerage analysts' reports.

Be warned: the WACC formula seems easier to calculate than it really is. Just as two people will hardly ever interpret a piece of art the same way, rarely will two people derive the same WACC. And even if two people do reach the same WACC, all the other applied judgments and valuation methods will likely ensure that each has a different opinion regarding the components that comprise the company's value.

...

#WallstreetOasis

WACC, or Weighted Average Cost of Capital, is a financial metric used to measure the cost of capital to a firm. It is most usually used to provide a discount rate for a financed project, because the cost of financing the capital is a fairly logical price tag to put on the investment. WACC is used to determine the discount rate used in a DCF valuation model.

The two main sources a company has to raise money are equity and debt. WACC is the average of the costs of these two sources of finance, and gives each one the appropriate weighting.

Using a weighted average cost of capital allows the firm to calculate the exact cost of financing any project.

The formula for how to calculate WACC may seem complicated but in reality is fairly simple:

(Percentage of finance that is equity x Cost of Equity) + (Percentage of finance that is debt x Cost of Debt) x (1 – Tax Rate)
...

#Wikipedia

The weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is the rate that a company is expected to pay on average to all its security holders to finance its assets.

The WACC is the minimum return that a company must earn on an existing asset base to satisfy its creditors, owners, and other providers of capital, or they will invest elsewhere. Companies raise money from a number of sources: common equity, preferred stock, straight debt, convertible debt, exchangeable debt, warrants, options, pension liabilities, executive stock options, governmental subsidies, and so on. Different securities, which represent different sources of finance, are expected to generate different returns. The WACC is calculated taking into account the relative weights of each component of the capital structure. The more complex the company's capital structure, the more laborious it is to calculate the WACC.

Trik Mempercepat / Tuning Query Execution di MS SQL Server - Indexing & Security Issue

#Indexing

Pertanyaan
  2. Kapan index diperlukan?
  3. Field apa saja yang perlu di-index?
  4. Susunan index yang optimal seperti apa?
Studi Kasus

Nama Tabel : T_Kegiatan
Fields :

  • Id Int (Bukan Primary Key)
  • Kegiatan varchar(100)
  • TglJam datetime
Jumlah data : 35.000.000

Query yang dijalankan :
Select * from T_Kegiatan where TglJam>='2011/01/01 00:00:01" and TglJam <='2011/01/01 00:30:01"

Hasil :

  • Durasi execution 30menit
  • Hasil yang keluar 8 Record
Kenapa lambat? Solusi :
  • Table Scan alias mencari data satu-satu mulai record ke-1 sampai ke-35jt.
  • Bayangkan agan mau cari sesuatu pd buku 1jt halaman tanpa daftar isi/index?
Jawaban

No.2 (Kapan index diperlukan?)
No.3 (Field apa saja yangg perlu di-index?)
  • Field yang mayoritas digunakan dalam where dan on
  • Field yang nilai/isi datanya hampir unik
  • Jawaban no.4 baca di bawah ya
Tambahan No.3:
No.4 (Susunan index yang optimal seperti apa?)
...

Study Kasus Memahami cara kerja SQL Engine Memilih Index
(Gunakan Estimate Execution Plan)

Table : T_transaksi (yang menampung semua transaksi pembayaran)
Fields :

  • id (Cluster Index primary key)
  • id_cabang (Non Cluster Index = IdxCbg)
  • tgltransaksi
  • pembayaran.
Jumlah baris : 100.000

  • id_cabang - count
    • 001 - 80000
    • 002 - 19900
    • 003 - 100
Soal 1 :
Select * from t_transaksi whre id_cabang='001'

Pertanyaan
Soal 2 :
Select * from t_transaksi whre id_cabang='003'

Pertanyaan
Pertanyaan Akhir
  1. menurut agan apa perlu buat index baru dgn nama IdxCbg field id_Cabang ?
  2. apa yang membedakan soal 1 dan soal 2?

Jawaban

5 Hal Yang Harus Kita Lakukan Di Tengah Badai Hidup & Pergumulan - Dari : Pelita Hidup

Static Vs Dynamic Website Overview & Perbedaan

#ED Interactive

What are static and dynamic websites?
There are many static websites on the Internet, you won’t be able to tell immediately if it is static, but the chances are, if the site looks basic and is for a smaller company, and simply delivers information without any bells and whistles, it could be a static website. Static websites can only really be updated by someone with a knowledge of website development. Static websites are the cheapest to develop and host, and many smaller companies still use these to get a web presence.

Advantages of static websites
  • Quick to develop
  • Cheap to develop
  • Cheap to host
Disadvantages of static websites
  • Requires web development expertise to update site
  • Site not as useful for the user
  • Content can get stagnant
Dynamic sites on the other hand can be more expensive to develop initially, but the advantages are numerous. At a basic level, a dynamic website can give the website owner the ability to simply update and add new content to the site. For example, news and events could be posted to the site through a simple browser interface. Dynamic features of a site are only limited by imagination. Some examples of dynamic website features could be: content management system, e-commerce system, bulletin / discussion boards, intranet or extranet facilities, ability for clients or users to upload documents, ability for administrators or users to create content or add information to a site (dynamic publishing).

Advantages of dynamic websites
  • Much more functional website
  • Much easier to update
  • New content brings people back to the site and helps in the search engines
  • Can work as a system to allow staff or users to collaborate
Disadvantages of dynamic websites
  • Slower / more expensive to develop
  • Hosting costs a little more
Summary
Many sites from the last decade are static, but more and more people are realising the advantages of having a dynamic website. Dynamic websites can make the most of your site and either use it as a tool or create a professional, interesting experience for your visitors.

#ExSite Web Ware

This document provides an overview of the differences between static and dynamic content, how ExSite manages these, and various tricks you can use to mix and match them.

Static Content
Static content is published to regular files on your server and handled using the simplest methods available to the web server.  The advantages of static content are:

  • it is the fastest and most efficient way to deliver content
  • it does not require any code to execute or any databases to be accessed, which makes it the most secure way to deliver content
  • it uses simple, clean URLs to address the content
  • it takes best advantage of web caching systems, which further boosts performance
  • it is compatible with every type of webserver technology
However, it also has the following disadvantages:
  • it must be republished when it changes, or your viewers will not see the updates
  • it cannot display differently to different viewers, depending on their login status or other factors
Dynamic Content
Dynamic content is generated for you at the time you request the page. The document you view exists only for you at that moment;  if viewed by someone else at the same time, or by you at a slightly different time, you could get something different.  Dynamic content is good for:

  • pages whose content changes too quickly to easily republish it
  • pages that display viewer-specific content (eg. user profiles)
  • pages that display content conditionally (ie. member-only pages)
However, dynamic content has the following disadvantages:
  • it is resource-intensive compared to static pages.  That means the number of dynamic pages your server can display per second will generally be much less than the number of static pages.  This can be especially important if you are swamped with traffic, or generating thousands of dynamic page views for robots or other automated agents that you don't really care about.
  • dynamic pages execute code on your server, and can read from and write to your database.  If your website has any security problems, dynamic pages is where those problems will be exposed.
  • in many typical default webserving configurations, the index page of a website is presumed to be a static page (eg. "index.html").  That means there are some places where it is impractical or more difficult to use dynamic pages than others.
Default View
Every page can declare whether it is static or dynamic.  This determines the default view of the page, for example the initial view of the page when you first navigate to it from a menu.

Static is the most efficient method, but some pages are best set to a dynamic view, because their contents change rapidly or unpredictably.  For example, forums can be updated at any time by readers, so a dynamic view works best to display the current comments.

Private (member-only) pages are dynamic by default, because they display different content depending on who is viewing them.
